La tregua come limitazione dei danni nei conflitti violenti: linguaggio e pratiche della “treuga” nell’Italia medievale (secoli XII-XV)

Il sito Tregua/Truce nasce da un progetto PRIN 2022 intitolato Truce as damage limitation in violent conflicts: language and practices of “treuga” in medieval Italy (12th-15th centuries). Il progetto (PRIN2022 Prot. 2022RTJ5AM) ha preso in considerazione linguaggi e pratiche della tregua, intesa come sospensione della violenza per un periodo limitato nel tempo, nell’Italia dei secoli XII-XV. Il fenomeno della tregua Dei nei secoli X e XI è stato molto ben studiato dalla storiografia: per questa ragione il progetto si è proposto di prendere in esame il periodo successivo e di non limitarsi alle tregue proclamate dalle autorità religiose. Nella vastissima fenomenologia che è designata dal termine treuga (con le sue varianti) il gruppo di ricerca ha scelto di individuare alcuni ambiti, affidati agli approfondimenti specifici delle tre unità in cui è suddiviso:

1. L’unità dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano si è dedicata prevalentemente all’analisi di testi normativi, esaminando la tradizione decretistica e decretalistica, le disposizioni di sinodi e di concili, le fonti normative locali.

2. L’unità dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo ha concentrato la sua attenzione sulle tregue della Guerra del Vespro (1282-1372), evidenziando attori, mediatori e contesti politico-economici.

3. L’unità dell’Università degli Studi di Macerata si è interessata delle molteplici funzioni svolte dalle tregue e delle pacificazioni (pratiche che vanno tenute distinte, anche se hanno alcune analogie) nel contesto della conflittualità intercittadina e intracittadina delle attuali Marche e Umbria (secoli XIV e XV).

Dalle ricerche compiute nel contesto del progetto, che vanno intese come premesse per ulteriori sviluppi e indagini, è emerso che la tregua, nella sua consapevole precarietà, mostra di essere uno strumento estremamente duttile e adattabile a situazioni di grande complessità.

Il sito Tregua/Truce informa sui risultati del progetto concluso, ma contemporaneamente è aperto ai nuovi sviluppi. Per questo motivo contiene non solo una sezione dedicata ai prodotti della ricerca, ma anche quelli che abbiamo designato come “strumenti della ricerca”. Secondo l’articolazione in tre unità, l’utente vi può reperire infatti raccolte di fonti edite, tabelle e mappe interattive geolocalizzate che consentono di ricostruire itinerari e una geografia delle fonti preziosa per future indagini.

Truce as damage limitation in violent conflicts: language and practices of “treuga” in Medieval Italy (XII-XV centuries)

The Tregua/Truce website originated from a PRIN 2022 project entitled Truce as damage limitation in violent conflicts: language and practices of “Treuga” in medieval Italy (12th-15th centuries). This project (PRIN2022 Prot. 2022RTJ5AM) examined the languages and practices of truce – defined as a temporary cessation of hostilities – in Italy between the 12th and 15th centuries. Historiography has extensively studied the phenomenon of the Tregua Dei in the tenth and eleventh centuries; therefore, the project aimed to examine the subsequent period and not confine its analysis to truces proclaimed by religious authorities alone. Within the very broad range of phenomena designated by the term treuga (and its variants), the research group selected specific fields of investigation, entrusting the in-depth work to the three research units into which the project was divided:

1. The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore research unit primarily focused on analysing normative texts, examining the decretist and decretalist tradition, the provisions of synods and councils, and local normative sources.

2. The research unit at the University of Palermo concentrated on the truces of the War of the Sicilian Vespers (1282-1372), highlighting the role played by involved parties, mediators, and the political and economic contexts.

3. The research unit at the University of Macerata investigated the multiple functions performed by truces and pacificazioni (two distinct practices with certain similarities) within the context of inter- and intra-city conflicts in the Marche and Umbria regions during the 14th and 15th centuries.

The research carried out within the framework of the project – intended as a premise for further developments and investigations – has shown that, in its consciously precarious nature, the truce proves to be an extremely flexible instrument, adaptable to situations of great complexity.

The Tregua/Truce website presents the results of the completed project, while remaining open to future developments. To this end, it includes a section devoted to research outputs as well as materials designated as ‘research tools’. In line with the project’s three-part structure, users can access collections of published sources, tables and geolocated interactive maps. These resources are extremely valuable for future research as they enable the reconstruction of itineraries and the geography of sources.
